Sydell and Arnold Miller and their family’s lives revolved around the professional beauty industry. Arnold was a talented hairdresser with a dream and Sydell was a dream maker who helped make it happen. They started their first product company in 1971 called Ardell. The company made Duralash eyelashes, and their first haircare product called Hennalucent.

In 1980, the Miller’s founded Matrix Essentials and grew it into one of the largest “professional only” beauty companies in the world. Arnold passed away in December of 1992 and the company was sold a few years later. Sydell later served as Chair Person of the Board of Directors for SalonQuest, the maker of Aquage and Biomega Haircare.

In March 2017, the Millers were honored with the Legacy Award by Beauty Changes Lives Foundation at the America’s Beauty Show (ABS) in Chicago. To celebrate this award, the Miller Family established this scholarship program to carry on their family name in an industry they loved and wanted to give back to. It is their desire to help elevate the Professional Beauty Industry through a $1Million Scholarship Program for beauty school students and Next Gen hairdressers over the next 10 years.

Funds have provided educational opportunities, hurricane relief, and support in the fights against breast cancer, domestic violence, and other destroyers of self-esteem.

The grant will allow Beauty Changes Lives the opportunity to offer scholarships to students in nearly every aspect of the beauty industry, including barber, cosmetology, esthetics, and/or nail licensure programs.

In 1978, Horst Rechelbacher founded the Aveda Corporation, a global plant-based cosmetic company, and ushered a new consciousness into the world of beauty. Two decades later “the father of Safe Cosmetics” left Aveda to purse the mission of next-level certified organic, sustainable, inside-and-out beauty. In 2008, he revealed the first USDA certified organic hair care line, Intelligent Nutrients. It broke new ground to revolutionize the beauty industry again. Intelligent Nutrients lives to the highest standards of 100% plant-based products. All of Horst’s innovations revolved around beauty products that would care for professionals, their guests, and the planet through the power of pure flower & plant essences. Horst passed away in February of 2014. Today the company is led by his wife Kiran Stordalen and daughter Nicole Rechelbacher, who were instrumental since day one.

In April 2018, Horst Rechelbacher was honored with the Legacy Award by the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation at the Experience event hosted during America’s Beauty Show (ABS) in Chicago. To celebrate and carry on Horst’s passion for the industry the Horst M. Rechelbacher foundation established this scholarship program to carry on their family name in an industry they want to continue to foster new growth and innovation within.
